ZDayZ

Zdayz is an anual event for Z lovers all over the United States. It takes place at the Fontanna Village in Fotanna, North Carolina. Fontanna is nestled up in the scenic Smokie Mountains. What makes this place perfect for a Z meet is that it is right next to a very exciting strip of road -- Tail of the Dragon. The Tail of the Dragon is named as such due to the twistie -- turnie nature of the road. On a map, it looks like long twisting tail and the dragon is a reference to the unforgiving nature of the curves. 11 miles in all it is some of the most formatable road on the East Coast of the United States.

For this year's event, there were over 80 Zs that showed up (and 1 G35 <-- we will call the G35 "Token"). Every generation Z showed up; there were 240s, 280s, 300s, and 350s. It was a real mix of the old and new guards. Everyone had a really nice time socializing about Z cars.

Andy and Morris did a great time organizing this year's event. The careful planning and attention to detail really showed.

Story Time (How to cure a hangover):

There I was sitting in bed, trying to wake up after a good night's sleep. I have a small headache from last night, I am still a little drunk. I get out of bed and take a shower, get dressed, and head out to my car.

I run right down the road to the convenience store to pick up some coffee and a breakfast bar. After eating my breakfast, I head down to the front parking lot to see if anyone is interested in a mid-morning Dragon run. I see a couple of people heading out to their cars and I ask if they are going to make a run. They nod and say that I can tag along.

As we depart the parking lot I am the last Z in a line of 4. I am still a little groggy and I am trying desperately to shake loose the remaining sleep from my head.

Slowly we head up the dragon hoping for a good run without too many other drivers to get in the way. As we cross the bridge, our pace begins to quicken; I start to feel my body slide from side to side with the motion of the car. As the dragon starts to coil it's tail tighter and tighter around our cars, our pace continues to increase. Left, then right, then left, then right again. I can smell the pugnt odor of my brakes. My tires beg for mercy as they screetch through each and every turn. Rythm and timing.

We make it to the base of the Dragon without incident and I noticed that my headache is gone and as we slow down a little before the long journey up the beast.. I also notice that I am completely focused on the road. I relax for a second and think, "What a rush."

Tips for visiting Fontana Village:

  1. Fontanna is in a dry county. So unless you plan on driving 10 minutes for the nearest convinience store that sells beer (Although the ride is great), brink your own booze.
  2. Your cell phone will not work. To get a signal, you have to drive out 10 miles 915 minutes).
  3. Find out which types of rooms contain phones. I had a three bedroom cabin and it came with a phone, however, I know that several of the one room rentals did not contain a phone.
  4. Get out on the Dragon early, the Dragon doesn't get clogged until late morning, so take advantage of that.
  5. Everything closes at 5! Gas Station, convenience store, everything besides the dining hall closes at 5:00. The closest town is over 20 minutes away, so if you plan on doing any late night driving, fill up before 5!
